Interfaith gathering a reason for hope
Muslim dialog Group inaugural event focuses on common ground
This is a trying time in which fear and distrust and suspicion are being served up in helpings much too large to be healthful. That's why Saturday's interfaith feast hosted by the Bloomington Muslim dialog Group was a dose of chicken soup for the soul.
The organization was formed a few months ago because its founders perceived the need to encourage interaction among people of different faith groups in a time of tension and misunderstanding. They are aware that a lot of the misunderstanding is focused on Islam and Muslims.
The group's mission statement is: "We are a group of Muslim individuals dedicated to promoting respect and understanding among all belief and faith traditions through organizing settings for the exchange of ideas and social interaction. We believe that establishment of dialog environments will be a means to appreciate diverse opinions and eliminate the stereotypes often assigned to 'others.' We invite and encourage sharing of various perspectives, which will inspire and illuminate us in our endeavor to fulfill this mission."
Saturday's inaugural event included people from a variety of faith groups, including Jews, Muslims and a wide variety of Christian denominations. They talked with each other, dined together, listened to music together.
Most importantly, they sought understanding and common ground.
The quest for those foundations on which to build stronger relationships deserves our praise and support.
